Winter is closing in on Melbourne. The days are gloomier, the nights longer and colder. Tis the season to enjoy the delights of snuggling up under a nice warm doona with a good book. Paul Freeman’s “Bondi” series of male nudes is the perfect companion for heating up the homes of winter hermits. TPI is offering a winter special on sets of all three titles. Ordinarily all three titles would set you back $AUD224.90 but if you mention this offer you can have Paul Freeman’s Bondi Classic, Bondi Urban and Bondi Work for only $AUD190.00.

Book Review : Eighteen

Filed under: Book Reviews, Uncategorized — printedimage @ 2:49 pm

Melbourne photographer Cindy Godden’s first book Eighteen: From Adversity to Hope – Five Photo Essays on Young Australians is a powerful collection of  images exploring issues as diverse as teen pregnancy, domestic violence, drug dependency, homelessness, living with a disability and the problems faced by new refugees. Godden’s vision is acute and considered. She captures that delicate combination of strength and fraility so intrinsic to human dignity. Her subjects lend their faces and stories to the horrifying statistics of economic, physical and psychological distress that are too often overlooked in ‘the lucky country’. Godden’s talent proves just how necessary it is for social documentary photographers to give voice to unheard stories and to stir the consciences of those who view the work.

A.P.C.S. Photography Market Update

Filed under: Uncategorized — printedimage @ 3:11 pm

Organisers estimate that between 750 and 1000 people attended the A.P.C.S. Photography Market held in Camberwell Town Hall on Sunday 8th October. While those numbers were down slightly from attendance at the March fair, most stall holders were pleased with the turnout. The early start and patchy rain did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of attendees or stall holders!

The Printed Image were surprised to note that interest was highest in alternative process and digital technique books. It would seem that digital and traditional processes are not as mutually exclusive as they may appear and many keen photographers are actually exploring both areas.

We were also pleased to note a resurgence of interest in fine quality monographs. Hardcover coffee table books tend to be the domain of collectors, however many visitors to our stall chose these over the cheaper softcovered books in our specials crates. Hopefully this is an indication that people are returning to sourcing inspiration from the fine quality and detail of books. While the internet is convenient, quick and broad in its scope, it does not offer the same contemplative pleasure as a lovingly produced book.

It was wonderful to touch base with our customers. We fielded some great suggestions for titles to bring in to store. We also received a number of applications for our gallery so watch this space for upcoming exhibitions. See you next year at the fair!
