Winners have been announced for the 2007 Head On Alternative Portraits Prize. The People’s Choice Award 2007 went to Christian Mushenko for “Superheroes”. Other winners were Matthew Duchasne for “Ahmad”, Thuy Vy for “Ancestors” and Stephen Dupont for “Axe Mi Biggie” (“Mr Take My Picture”). Neil Wallace received a special commendation for his image “Megan”.

Melbourne photographer Sonia Payes has recently released a large collection
of impressive portraits of Australian artists. Images from the series are on show

Melbournians – and visitors to Victoria – can get a beautiful people fix with a quick visit to the State Library of Victoria on Swanston Street. The exhibition comes to Victoria courtesy of The National Portrait Gallery in Canberra and was curated by Simon Elliott – the gallery’s former Deputy Director. SLV is hosting a free public exhibition of approximately 90 images by Australian photographer Karin Catt. Playing with the self-reflexive performativity of contemporary celebrity culture,Catt’s images are rich and elaborately glamourous. Her work may be familiar to some viewers as many shots have been previously published in magazines such as Harpers Bazaar, Rolling Stone and Vogue. Famous faces on show include Eric Bana, Russell Crowe, Lou Reed, David Byrne, PJ Harvey, Yoko Ono and George Bush.

You Have Got To Be In It To Win It…
Registrations are due on Monday 27 August 2007 for the Centre of Contemporary Photography’s (CCP) 2007 Colour Factory Photography Award.
The Colour Factory Photography Award is awarded to emerging photographic artists in the first five years of their practice. The prize is exhibition space in Gallery Two as well as type C exhibition prints produced in consultation with the Colour Factory.

600 Playboy Bunnies…
Exciting news for Playboy fans – TPI has heard about a new book release from the Mansion – Playboy: The Complete Centrefolds. This book is due for publication in November of this year and will feature every centrefold from 1953 until the present day. You will be able to feast your eyes on the flesh of over six hundred naked and semi-naked women, beginning with Marilyn Monroe.
The book is a large format 720 page edition. Each image is the actual size of the original magazine publication. Pitched at the high end of the book market with a price tag of $650.00, it comes in a linen-covered clamshell art box carrying case with a combination lock. Prints on Display
TPI is currently showing a range of photographs by The Melbourne Camera Club. Images include landscape, portraits, wildlife, sports and travel. The club runs a variety of workshops, exhibitions and special events for its members. If you are interested in finding out more about the club here is a link:

We also have two matted and framed urban landscape photographs by Camilla Bertocchi on display. Both prints are available for purchase at $100.00 each. One is titled “Mediocrity” and depicts the uniformity of urban living. The other shows the Australian flag at half-mast and is a tribute to the London Bombings.
