Photography Hits and Misses in 2007
THE A.P.C.S. PHOTOGRAPHY MARKET
TPI took up our usual spot on Sunday 18th March at the Australian Photographic Collectors Society Photography Market. Despite – or possibly because of – the beautiful weather, attendee numbers were down a little on last year. While there was an abundance of analogue cameras, lighting gear and darkroom equipment available for sale, there was a definate shortage of consumables. The usual good deals on film stock were in short supply and TPI overheard attendees expressing surprise that what was available remained close to recommended retail prices. Most people seemed to leave with armfuls of very reasonably priced darkroom equipment. TPI were pleased to note a resurgence of interest in fine quality out of print black and white monographs and rare exhibition catalogues. We also fielded a number of enquiries about the photographers David LaChapelle and Floria Sigismundi which seems to indicate that current staged photography trends show no signs of abating.
We hope see you at the Spring Market in October!

Gratuitous Product Placement : Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
While TPI is generally in the business of flogging our own wares – namely interesting and wonderful books about photography or by photographers – we were terribly excited to hear about Adobe’s new software package Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.
Being a little bit old skool and little bit bookish, TPI is not overly fond of spending hours behind a computer. We have found the miracle of digital photography rather time consuming and rather deleterious to our mouse paws. So it is was with much delight that we scanned the Lightroom promotional material from Adobe. They are promising that Lightroom will:
- support direct data downloads from over 150 types of camera raw formats
- create a working copy for image adjustments without altering the original data file
- allow images to be sorted, adjusted, uploaded and outputted while on location
- be pretty and easy to use!
Watch this space for further information about the inevitable proliferation of “How To”, “Short Cuts” and “For Professionals” user guide books.

Book of the Month : TPI Bookclub Members Special
To coincide with Melbourne’s L’Oreal Fashion Week, TPI has been celebrating fashion photographers. This month’s TPI Bookclub Member’s Special is Helmut Newton’s A Gun For Hire.
Despite Helmut Newton’s protestations to the contrary, the enduring power of his work is tied to the artistry of his images. Newton always claimed that he was not an artist, he was “a gun for hire”, however the consistent development of themes and techniques in his work demonstrate a degree of self-referentiality not often evident in the work of commercial photographers. His imagery celebrates the power dressing Amazon look popular in the 1980’s and is now popular with female photographers – and booklovers – as a more feminist slant on fashion photography. Newton drew a lot of his inspiration from his wife June – also known as Alice Springs – who is a successful photographer from Melbourne.
The book brings together a selection of Newton’s fashion catalogue work, from as early as 1962 through to 2003, and his last editorial photographs for U.S. and Italian Vogue. One of the most influential fashion photographers of all time, he preferred to shoot in the streets or interiors, with his signature mixture of controversial scenarios, bold lighting and striking compositions.

David LaChapelle : Heaven to Hell
David LaChapelle’s much anticipated Heaven to Hell book has just arrived in store at The Printed Image. The third volume in an exhilarating trilogy that began with LaChapelle Land (1996) and continued with the infamous Hotel LaChapelle (1999), Heaven to Hell (2007) is a darker vision.
LaChapelle turns the glitz and glamour of late 20th and early 21st century into an almost apocalyptic vision of excess and despair wherein Western cultures’ seemingly insatiable appetite for consumption overwhelms every other human aspiration. He draws correlations between the mainstream proliferation of pornography, the obesity ‘epidemic, the cult of celebrity and fashion fetishism – all are of symptoms of our culture’s frantic attempts to somehow satisfy a perpetual state of desire. There is a tremendous vacuity evident in his portraits with his subjects almost always overwhelmed by props and their surroundings. In TPI’s opinion this is his thematically strongest collection and will stand as a testament to the subversive power of his imagery.
