Photography enthusiasts will find two feasts for their eyes in Melbourne’s  Federation Square.

Light Sensitive at NGV is a selection of contemporary Australian photography. The images are
predominantly large scale works – a factor which generates a lot of impact – and are unified
by a preoccupation with people and their ‘habitats’. Digital, black & white, colour and alternative process photographic techniques are all represented. TPI’s favourite works on show were by Narelle Autio and Selina Ou,  however other attendees were fascinated by the cyanotype photograms. Exhibition runs until 18 February 2007.

Eyes, Lies & Illusions is a wonderful collection of images and artefacts that deal with the
art and science of perception. The historical paths that led to contemporary photographic and cinematic image making are evident in the toys and optical illusions on display here – many over two hundred years old. Original stereogram photographs and Eadweard Muybridge’s first stills of human locomation are awe inspiring, leading TPI to wonder if the digital images of our age will stand the test of time! Exhibition runs until 11 February 2007.

Permanent Memory…

Filed under: Digital Photography, Editorials — printedimage @ 3:15 pm

We overhead an interesting conversation between two photographers in the store this week and are very interested in finding out what our readers think…

The topic of discussion was about using the memory cards from digital cameras as permanent storage rather than as a temporary recording device ie the memory card would function like a roll of film – you would fill it with images and then keep it as the original copy.

The logic behind this approach is that it makes archiving work easier because one copy will already permanently exist. It can then be backed up on to DVD’s, flash drives or HDD’s. This saves the often time consuming step of downloading and erasing files from the digital camera.

TPI thinks that this approach has its merits – although we have not done the maths in order to work out cost effectiveness! Let us know what you think…
