Book Review : The Shearers

Filed under: Book Reviews — printedimage @ 2:41 pm

  shear02.jpeg                                   shear05.jpeg                               shear03.jpeg

Andrew Chapman’s book The Shearers explores a quintessentially Australian way of life. It is a visual celebration of the men and women who work the sheds in the shearing industry, from the skinniest roustabout to the crankiest cook.  The black and white images were shot in outback New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. Time stops in Chapman’s photographs of a way of life, that despite being almost as old as Australia itself, has remained essentially unchanged. The Shearers offers a touching glimpse into rural life and honest portraits of the people who inhabit some of the toughest terrain this country has to offer.

Focus On : Hot Blog

Filed under: Websites — printedimage @ 1:56 pm

Being relatively new to the blogsphere, The Printed Image is well aware just how difficult it is to maintain a healthy  blog. The crew at http://www.threethousand.com.au/ run a particularly fierce operation dedicated to finding and reviewing  the best of Melbourne’s cultural activity. Bent towards the hidden, the new and the left of centre, Three Thousand is the best way to for punters to keep abreast of all things artsy. The companion blog – http://www.nownow.com.au/ - publishes five new posts per day -  that’s right folks, FIVE. Topics include reviews, editorial pieces and subversive snippets of agitprop.

Our verdict : RSS it nownow!

Exhibition Highlight : The World’s Most Photographed

Filed under: Exhibition Listings, Exhibition Reviews — printedimage @ 3:48 pm

What: The World’s Most PhotographedWhere: Bendigo Art Gallery

When: 9th December 2006 to 25th March 2007

Despite our fascination with celebrity and the vast array of trashy magazines that perpetuate that fascination, there are few truly enduring images of great – or notorious – people. Curated by Robin Muir, The World’s Most Photographed is a survey of ten public figures. The biggest drawcards have been images of Adolph Hitler and Mahatma Ghandi. It also includes photographs of Queen Victoria and President Kennedy. Muhammad Ali is the only sports person on show while the entertainment world is represented by Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and James Dean.

Muir carefully avoided including images of Princess Diana as he believes her life, and death, have been heavily exploited by the media. Muir wryly remarks that Kate Moss is the only celebrity that he wishes he had included. Her celebrity status has only been enhanced by paparazzi activity. Despite being photographed in incriminating situations, Moss has escaped relatively unscathed. She has fallen victim to one of the emerging trends in photojournalism – that of the members of the public selling images taken on mobile phone cameras to news agencies.

Book Review : Eighteen

Filed under: Book Reviews, Uncategorized — printedimage @ 2:49 pm

Melbourne photographer Cindy Godden’s first book Eighteen: From Adversity to Hope – Five Photo Essays on Young Australians is a powerful collection of  images exploring issues as diverse as teen pregnancy, domestic violence, drug dependency, homelessness, living with a disability and the problems faced by new refugees. Godden’s vision is acute and considered. She captures that delicate combination of strength and fraility so intrinsic to human dignity. Her subjects lend their faces and stories to the horrifying statistics of economic, physical and psychological distress that are too often overlooked in ‘the lucky country’. Godden’s talent proves just how necessary it is for social documentary photographers to give voice to unheard stories and to stir the consciences of those who view the work.

SEAN O’NEIL : PHOTOGRAPHS

Where: The Printed Image, 226 Chapel Street, Prahran, Vic.

When: 1st November – 30 November 2006.

02.jpgSean draws his inspiration from the beauty of the natural world: its line, form, colour and texture, and the play of light and shadow. Having a strong affinity with nature since early childhood has allowed him to develop a boundless sense of wonder and an urge to “simply be outside where there’s always something to see and do“.

01.jpgHis other main interest is the artistic female nude. “I’m drawn to the natural beauty of the female form, and the play of light and shadow is of endless fascination. The artistic collaboration between photographer and subject is also a wondrous and exciting experience”

03.jpgSean’s aim is to create images that arise through an instinctual and intuitive process, and he generally prefers simplicity over complexity in both image and technique. “I love to use directional and diffused window light for a variety of subjects, so I’m certainly influenced by the Dutch and Flemish painters on that score. I would have to say that these painters along with some of the Impressionists have influenced me greatly, followed by a handful of photographers who mostly shoot film on medium or large format cameras”

04.jpgA painterly feel is certainly evident in many of the images Sean creates. Sean has a spontaneous and open-minded approach to his photography, believing that “whatever grabs your attention is worth a second look”
